    Major Research Accomplishments

    Pig Reproduction and Production

    • The cryopreservation protocol and techniques were standardized for freezing boar semen and for the first time in India, piglets were produced through AI with Frozen semen. The magnitude of the oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation to boar spermatozoa during preservation was assessed. Importantly, apoptosis like changes in boar spermatozoa during preservation was also quantified.
    • A “Modified Giemsa staining method” was developed to estimate the acrosomal integrity in boar sperm. Unlike the routine procedures, which requires >2.5 h to stain the smears for estimation of the acrosomal integrity of sperm, the developed method requires only 45 min.
    • For the first time, the very early sexual maturity (within 2-3 months of age against 6-9 months in exotic pigs) in nondescript local male pigs was documented, analyzed and proved scientifically through semen analysis, and in vivo pregnancy test. in nondescript local male pigs was documented, analyzed and prove
    • Quantified the nutrient deficiency in pigs reared under traditional production system and strategic nutrient supplementation through locally available resources was evolved.
    • Developed and demonstrated an improved pig production system to optimize pork productivity. The improved system showed a potential to increase the pork production by 136%.

    Dairy Cattle Reproduction

    • Quantified the mineral deficiency in dairy cattle and established the soil-plant-continuum in hilly region.
    • For the first time, a Mizoram state specific mineral mixture was developed for supplementing the dairy cattle.
    • The factors influencing conception rate with Artificial Insemination in cows were assessed and found out that more than 30% of the cows were inseminated at wrong time, which accounts significantly for low conception rate in field conditions.
    • Incidence of reproductive disorders among dairy cattle was assessed under smallholder production system in NEH Region and found that incidence of repeat breeders and anestrus among the crossbred cows was 12.8 and 14.1%, respectively.

    Integrated animal production system

    Developed an integrated animal – fish production model comprising of pig, duck, dairy, poultry, rabbit and composite fish culture. The integrated model had increased the income by 314 % over the existing production under traditional non-integrated production system.
