The Institute offers Ph.D. programmes in 14 disciplines. The programme comprises of course work for two semesters followed by research work for the thesis. The course work is offered at karnal campus whereas the scholars can be allotted to different laboratories/guides located at ERS Kalyani and SRS, Bangaluru for the thesis work. All Ph.D. scholars are supported by the Institute through award of Institute Fellowship.

The duration of the course for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Dairying) shall be at least six semesters (3 academic years) for the students who have undergone 4 years undergraduate programme and 2 years of PG programme.  The students admitted to Ph.D. programme with 3 years bachelor degree will have to undergo one year pre-requisite course work and their minimum duration of the programme will be 8 semesters (4 years)

Elligibility Requirements

Candidates having Master’s Degree in the relevant field as given below must have obtained atleast 60% marks or an overall grade point average (OGPA) of 6.50 out of 10.00 or 3.25 out of 5.00 or 2.60 out of 4.00 (For SC/ST candidates 55% marks of OGPA of 6.00 out of 10.00, 3.00 out of 5.00 or 2.40 out of 4.00) or a certificate from Registrar of having OGPA equivalent to 60% marks.


The candidate should have completed age of 21 years on or before 31st July of particular year of admission. There will be no maximum age limit for Doctoral Programme. No relaxation is admissible regarding the minimum age limit.

• Nomenclature of Degree in Dairy Economics will be Ph. D. Agricultural Economics/Ph. D. Livestock Economics.

• Based on the courses covered in Master’s degree programme, remedial courses may be offered in addition to the regular courses.

• One who is appearing for above PG Programmes in the year 2014 can also apply subject to production of qualifying examination certificate of Master’s Degree programme on or before 31st July 2014.

Procedure for Application
  1. Application for admission shall be made in the prescribed form meant for the purpose.
  2. The application form bears a serial number at the top left corner on page 1. This number, as well as the main subject to which the admission is sought, must be quoted in all correspondence regarding admission to this Institute.
  3. All correspondence for admission of in- service candidates should be addressed to the Joint Director, National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal-132001 (Haryana). For all important dates please see important instructions on the back of cover page.
  4. In order to obtain acknowledgement for the receipt of the application by the Institute, candidates are advised to send their applications by registered post, acknowledgement due in the envelop attached with the application form.
  5. Application for admission must be completed in block letters. All entries in the application form must be filled up and attested copies of the following certificates and documents (original certificate should not be sent with the application form) are to be attatched, failing which the application is liable to be rejected.
    a) Certificate for date of birth.
    b) Certificates of all examinations passed starting from Matriculation to Bachelor’s Degree.
    c) Mark lists indicating percentage of marks in each subject, total marks and class obtained, etc. of all examinations passed.
    d) A certificate from the Principal/Dean of College indicating the marks/division obtained at the Bachelor’s Degree examination passed.
    e) In case of SC/ST candidate, a certificate from a first class Magistrate of a District/Competent Authority indicating that the candidate belongs to a particular SC/ST category which is included in the latest list appended to the constitution of India, SC/ST 1950. Application without such certificate will be considered against unreserved seats only.
    f) Three recent passport size photographs duly attested should be affixed at appropriate place of the Application/Admit Card.
  6. (6) All original certificates and marks sheet are to be produced at the time of registration. Candidates who do not produce all the original certificates and mark sheets will not be admitted.
  7. If a candidate willfully furnishes wrong information or suppresses any relevant information, his/her candi-dature/ admission will automatically stand cancelled.
  8. Admit Card will be issued to the in-service candidates who are eligible to appear in interview. If a candidate does not receive the Admit Card for interview or other information from the Institute one week before the date of interview, he/she should contact University Office at Telephone/FAX/E-mail numbers given on back of cover page.

Entrance Examination & Selection Procedure

    1. The candidates who fulfill the minimum qualifications will be eligible to appear in the entrance examination. Those who are not found eligible will be informed accordingly. The entrance examination will be conducted at following centers:
      1. NDRI, Karnal, (Haryana)
      2. Southern Regional Station, NDRI, Adugodi, Bangaluru (Karnataka)
      3. Eastern Regional Station, NDRI, Kalyani (W B)
    2. There will be only one paper based on subject matter of  2 hrs duration and of 200 marks.
    3.  The question paper will include questions based on  multiple choice, true/false, match the following, and short answers.
    4. The syllabus of written examination for Ph.D. programme in different disciplines has been provided  in the information Bulletin as Annexure-I.
    5. The minimum qualifying marks for the written examination will be 100 (90 for SC/ST) Marks. Such candidates who do not qualify in the written examination will not be considered for admission even if the seats remain vacant. 
    6. The final selection for admission to Ph.D. will be based on merit list prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the Entrance Examination.
    7. Only those students will be registered who will complete their qualifying examination in all respect on or before  31st July i.e. before the commencement of new academic session
    8. The list of qualified candidates will be notified and placed on the Institute website. Candidates selected for admission shall be informed by e-mailt and also notified on website..
    9. The waiting list will be operated upto  closing date (31st August) in each session, and no request for admission from the wait listed candidates will be entertained after the closing date.

In -Service Candidates and Their Selection Procedure


Vice-Chancellors/ Directors/ Head of the Institutions concerned may depute their faculty/ employees for admission to Master and Doctoral Programmes subject to following conditions:


  1. The candidate must be fully sponsored by his/ her employer.
  2. The candidate must fulfill the eligibility conditions for admission to Ph.D.:
    Candidates having Master’s Degree in the relevant field as given below must have obtained atleast 60% marks or an overall grade point average (OGPA) of 6.50 out of 10.00 or 3.25 out of 5.00 or 2.60 out of 4.00 (For SC/ST candidates 55% marks of OGPA of 6.00 out of 10.00, 3.00 out of 5.00 or 2.40 out of 4.00) or a certificate from Registrar of having OGPA equivalent to 60% marks.
  3. The candidates should be in permanent employment under Central/ State/ Govt. or Universities and must have three years experience in the relevant field as on the closing day for receipt of applications.
  4. In-service candidates shall be admitted over the above the seats as mentioned in table Ph.D with the approval of the Director.
  5. The Applications duly completed with all documents (including Form-A) should be forwarded by the Vice-Chancellor/ Director/ Head of Institution so as to reach Registrar, NDRI Deemed University on or before the closing date. Direct application by the candidate or advance copy shall not be accepted.
  6. There will be no Entrance Examination, the eligible candidates will have to appear for pesonal interview at Karnal.
  7. The admission of in-service candidates will be decided on merit after taking into account their Academic Score (85%) and marks obtained in interview (15%). The minimum qualifying marks in the interview shall be 60% of the maximum marks prescribed, candidates failing in the interview will not be admitted.
  8. The applications of ineligible candidates shall be rejected.
  9. Academic Score
    The Academic Score will include the weightage of applicant’s continuous academic record from SSLC/Matric onwards. The Academic Score will be calculated as per the Ready Recknor given below:

  1. If a candidate has done M.Sc., B.Sc., I.Sc.and Matriculation or High School examination X1, X2, X3 and X4, his/her academic score will be obtained as:
    Y = X1 + 0.60 X2 + 0.25X3 + 0.15X4
    Y = Total academic score
    X1 = Percentage of marks in M.Sc. examination
    X2 = Percentage of marks in B.Sc. examination
    X3 = Percentage of marks in I.Sc. examination
    X4 = Percentage of marks in Matriculation or
    High School Examination
  2. if a candidate has done M.Sc.,B.Sc. and Higher Secondary X1 , X2 , X3 , his/her academic score will be obtained as:
    Y = X1 +0.60X2 +0.40X3
    Where, Y, X1 and X2 are same as in (a) and X3 = %age of marks in Hr. Secondary Exam.


  1. If any of X1 , X2 , X3 and X4 is greater than 80, then the value will be taken as 80 only.
    A weightage of 5 per cent of total academic score will be added to the academic score of the scientific/ technical staff of the Institute.
  2. In order to avail the relaxation as indicated above, only those scientific and technical staff of the Institute who are working in a particular discipline for at least 5 years will be eligible to apply for admission to Ph.D. programme in that particular discipline subject to their being otherwise eligible in respect of minimum percentage of marks in M.Sc. required for admission. The Deptt. candidates seeking admission to Ph.D. programme but not satisfying the above conditions, shall not be given the weightage of 5% of total academic score.

In-service candidates: one seat in each discipline over and above the above seats. (Vacant seat in one discipline may be transferred to other disciplines, without changing the total no. of seats for in-service candidates).

Foreign students: Over and above the above seats.

• The Ph.D. students selected against SRS seats will complete their course work at Karnal Campus and the thesis work at SRS, Bangalore except Dairy Engineering students who will undergo the course and thesis work at SRS, Bangalore.

• The candidates admitted to Ph.D. degree programme may be sent to any other Animal Science Institute of ICAR for their Thesis work after completion of course work.

Foreign Students
  • Foreign students seeking admission at this Institute shall have to submit their applications through their respective Embassies at New Delhi or the respective Indian Missions in their countries to the Govt. of India, Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi-110001 and the candidature of foreign students shall be considered only if they are sponsored with financial support by
    (a) their respective Governments or
    (b) the Government of India.
  • The nominees of foreign countries and those given under clause 10.1 should have the equivalent qualifications required for admission. In their cases, the percentage of marks will not be insisted. They should possess the requisite qualification in the concerned discipline and its cognate branches. A good knowledge of English is essential. A certificate of the candidate’s proficiency in English, issued by the respective Indian Mission abroad, should accompany their application for admission. Further, the foreign students are required to be in possession of visa.
  • All the foreign students other than those sponsored by the Government of India with suitable fellowship such as ITEC Program. General Cultural Scholarship and Cultural Technical Exchange will be charged Institutional Economic Fee @ US $ 400/- p.m. or US $ 4000/- p.a. This fee will be over and above other usual charges of the University.
  • Last date for receipt of application, results and mark sheet from the applicant, who are Foreign Nationals will be the same as prescribed for Indian citizens. 10.5 As per directive from the Govt. of India, Ministry of Health, New Delhi, health check for foreign students including that for AIDS is mandatory. Foreign students will subject themselves for health check within one month of arrival and till the results are known the students will be admitted provisionally. Their admission is to be confirmed on production of fitness certificate from the competent authority.
